257 practice questions for the California Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) test, the 30-question written test you pass before you can buy or receive a firearm in California. They cover every chapter of the DOJ study guide, weighted the way the guide is: the six basic safety rules and the extra safety points, firearms and children, how revolvers, pistols and long guns work, ammunition, dangerous range and malfunctions, cleaning and storage devices, straw purchases, and the California laws on sales, transport, self-defense and storage, including the secure storage law in effect since January 1, 2026. Many are real moments: the friend who says it's unloaded, the pistol with the magazine out, the glove box, the visiting grandchild. A separate topic walks the safe handling demonstration step by step (it's done at the dealer, not on the written test). Every answer explains why and names its source.
The real test: 30 true/false and multiple-choice questions given by a DOJ Certified Instructor, usually at a licensed firearms dealer, and 23 correct (75%) passes. The $25 fee covers the test and one retake with the same instructor after 24 hours; you must be 18 and show a California driver license or ID. The certificate is good for five years. It covers the DOJ study guide: safety rules, children, firearm operation, ammunition, storage, straw purchases and California firearms law. Our practice test is 30 questions in the same proportions, passing at 23.
Here: 257 questions. Our own practice questions, built on the California DOJ Firearm Safety Certificate Study Guide (June 2025) and the California Penal Code sections it cites (storage law as of January 1, 2026), with every answer's source named. Topics are the study guide's chapters. Not DOJ's test questions. Free.
