The Instrument Rating Airplane knowledge test (test code IRA) has one number to hit. Here it is, with what happens after, from the FAA's testing matrix and the regulations.
70% passes. On the 60-question IRA test, that's 42 right.
The IRA test is 60 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours, and the matrix lists a minimum age of 15 to take it. The FAA may add unscored validation questions on top of the scored ones; they don't count for or against you, and the allotted time already covers them.
