The Flight Instructor Airplane knowledge test (test code FIA) has one number to hit. Here it is, with what happens after, from the FAA's testing matrix and the regulations.
70% passes. On the 100-question FIA test, that's 70 right.
The FIA test is 100 multiple-choice questions in 2.5 hours, and the matrix lists a minimum age of 16 to take it. The FAA may add unscored validation questions on top of the scored ones; they don't count for or against you, and the allotted time already covers them.

You leave the test center with your Airman Knowledge Test Report (AKTR). It shows your score and a code for every question you missed. Keep the original: your instructor reviews those areas with you, and the examiner can ask about them on the practical test.
There's no waiting period for pilot and instructor tests. To retest you need more training from an authorized instructor who decides you're ready, and their endorsement (14 CFR 61.49). The instructor can sign the Authorized Instructor's Statement right on your failed AKTR. Bring that AKTR to the test center.
You have to pass the practical test within the 24-calendar-month period before the month you take it (14 CFR 61.39). In practice, your knowledge test is good through the end of the 24th month after the month you passed it.
