Idaho licenses EMTs through its Bureau of EMS, which has moved to the Idaho Military Division (Health and Welfare still hosts some of its pages). You can hold an EMT license at 16, and the state charges no licensure fee at the EMT level. Everything below comes from the Bureau's personnel page and its initial licensure checklist (July 2026), checked October 18, 2026.
Study aid, not a protocol. Nothing on this site replaces your course, your medical director or your agency's protocols. Built by an RN and former EMT. Headed In LLC is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) or any state EMS office; their names appear here only to point you to the real thing.
The national steps, briefly
A state-approved EMT course
Every state approves its own programs, all taught to the National EMS Education Standards. Most run 150 to 300 hours over three to six months.
A healthcare-provider CPR card
AHA BLS or an equivalent your state accepts, usually before clinicals.
The cognitive exam
The National Registry (NREMT) EMT exam: 70 to 120 adaptive questions in 2 hours, $104 per attempt, six attempts within two years of your course.
Your state's license or certification
The card comes from the state, not the Registry. The state's own steps are below.
Background check first: through the Health and Welfare Background Check Unit with pay code JFPUZW, before anything else; it can take up to eight weeks. Disqualifying crimes are listed in IDAPA 16.05.06.
Course or certification: an Idaho initial EMS course passed within the last 24 months, or National Registry certification (or an active license from another state).
Exam: the National Registry computer-based exam, unless you already hold active Registry certification; for EMTs, an exam taken within the last 36 months counts.
Application: create an account in IGEMS and submit "Provider BLS License - Initial" with a photo ID. No licensure fee for EMR or EMT.
Affiliation: affiliate with a licensed Idaho EMS agency, or apply for a Certificate of Eligibility if you cannot yet.
License and renewal: the EMT license lasts three years. Renewal opens in IGEMS six months before expiry and needs agency affiliation, your level's continuing education (or a Registry renewal in the last two years) and medical director credentialing. Lapsed licenses can be reinstated within 24 months.
