How to become an EMT in Indiana

Indiana certifies EMTs through the Department of Homeland Security's EMS division for the EMS Commission. You cannot work in Indiana on a National Registry card alone: you work once your Indiana certification posts to your Acadis record. Everything below comes from the division's certification pages and 836 IAC 4-4, checked October 18, 2026.

Study aid, not a protocol. Nothing on this site replaces your course, your medical director or your agency's protocols. Built by an RN and former EMT. Headed In LLC is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) or any state EMS office; their names appear here only to point you to the real thing.

The national steps, briefly

  1. A state-approved EMT course

Every state approves its own programs, all taught to the National EMS Education Standards. Most run 150 to 300 hours over three to six months.

  2. A healthcare-provider CPR card

AHA BLS or an equivalent your state accepts, usually before clinicals.

  3. The cognitive exam

The National Registry (NREMT) EMT exam: 70 to 120 adaptive questions in 2 hours, $104 per attempt, six attempts within two years of your course.

  4. Your state's license or certification

The card comes from the state, not the Registry. The state's own steps are below.

Indiana, step by step

Indiana Department of Homeland Security, EMS division (Indiana EMS Commission)

  1. Age: at least 18.
  2. Course: the Commission-approved Indiana basic EMT course at a certified training institution; you self-register for it in Acadis.
  3. Exams: the Indiana psychomotor skills exam (with your class, or at another approved site listed in Acadis) and the National Registry EMT cognitive exam, in either order.
  4. Background check: a national criminal history check that you pay for, plus a violation statement and a POST form in your Acadis account. Your Social Security number goes in Acadis for the EMS Compact.
  5. Application: the Initial EMT application through Acadis WebForms. Processing can take up to about 7 days, and the certificate is mailed. No initial fee appears on the division's page; ask your program.
  6. Renewal: certification is valid two years. Renew with 40 hours of continuing education every two years (at least 34 in the EMT curriculum and 6 of audit and review), any update course the Commission requires, and a skills proficiency evaluation.
  7. From another state: the reciprocity application with a verification of EMS status from your state; EMS Compact privilege-to-practice holders register separately through an Indiana EMS organization.
