WHAT'S THAT ON THE HORIZON?

Name that shore

Florida is flat, so everything on the horizon looks like a bump. Hold your phone up from the boat or the beach and it names what you're looking at: lighthouses, the Skyway, water towers, keys and islands, launch pads, drawbridges, inlets and passes, and how far off each one is. Tap a name and it reads it out.

Your location and camera stay on your phone. No location? Pick a spot:

HOW HIGH ARE YOUR EYES?
Drag the horizon to look around.

All the way around

How far you can see depends on how high your eyes are and how tall the thing is: a 100-foot lighthouse from a boat is gone past about 14 miles; the Skyway's 430-foot towers show up from 25. Haze cuts that a lot. Landmarks from OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL) and our own drawbridge and sandbar lists; inlet mouths from the USGS place-name list (GNIS). Phone compasses drift near metal and motors, so use the nudge slider. Not for navigation: use your chart.
