Series 7 passing score: 72. Here's what that means.

The General Securities Representative exam has one number to hit. Here it is, with the corequisite and retake rules, from FINRA.

The short answer

FINRA lists the passing score as 72.

The Series 7 is 125 scored multiple-choice questions plus 5 unscored, in 3 hours 45 minutes. FINRA puts scores on an equated scale, so 72 isn't a fixed count of right answers.

You also need the SIE

The SIE is a corequisite: to get the General Securities registration you must pass both the Series 7 and the SIE. You can take the SIE on your own at 18 or older. The Series 7 needs a sponsoring member firm. The fee is $395.

Where the questions come from

FINRA's content outline splits the 125 scored questions across 4 job functions: seeking business (9), opening accounts (11), information, recommendations and records (91) and processing transactions (14). Nearly three quarters of the exam is products and recommendations: options, bonds and munis, funds and annuities, and the math behind them.
