How to get a social work license in Oregon

Oregon credentials social workers as Registered Baccalaureate Social Workers (RBSW), Licensed Master Social Workers (LMSW), Clinical Social Work Associates (CSWA, the supervised step toward clinical licensure) and Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW). Everything below comes from the board's own pages and rules, checked October 18, 2026. Fees and rules change, so confirm on the linked pages before you pay.

Check with your board. Social Work Ticket is a study aid. Not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB), the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) or any state social work board; ASWB is their mark, used here only to name the exam. Laws on confidentiality, reporting and licensing differ by state; follow your state's law, your agency and your supervisor.

Oregon, step by step

Oregon Board of Licensed Social Workers

  1. Oregon laws and rules exam: every license level requires passing the board's open-book Oregon laws and rules exam.
  2. RBSW and LMSW: a BSW with ASWB Bachelors scores (RBSW, $150) or an MSW with ASWB Masters scores (LMSW, $200).
  3. CSWA: with an MSW and the laws and rules exam you can apply ($260) without an ASWB score. Practice under your board-approved supervision plan (agency and approved supervisor listed), meet your supervisor at least twice a month for an hour each, and log hours on the board's Supervision Report form. Renew by the last day of your birth month.
  4. LCSW hours: 3,500 total work hours, at least 2,000 direct client hours, 100 supervision hours (at least 50 individual) and at least 24 months of supervised clinical experience. Only LCSWs can provide all 100 supervision hours; other licensed mental health professionals can provide up to 50.
  5. LCSW exam: once you meet the requirements, the board gives you permission to take the ASWB Clinical exam.

The national steps, briefly

The steps that hold nearly everywhere: a CSWE-accredited degree, your board's approval (or ASWB's, in a few states), the ASWB exam at the level your license needs, then the license. Every ASWB level has 122 questions (110 scored) in 4 hours; Bachelors and Masters cost $230, Advanced Generalist and Clinical $260, and you wait at least 90 days to retake (ASWB Examination Guidebook, August 2026). A passing score counts in every state for the same exam level. The full walk-through: How to get your social work license.
