INSTRUMENT READING
Which way is up?
Two instruments, one airplane. Read the attitude indicator (nose up or down, wings level or banked) and the compass (which way it's headed), then call what the airplane is doing. Some rounds flip it around: you get the description and pick the instruments.
- Attitude indicator: the little orange airplane never moves. More blue than brown means the nose is up. The horizon tilts the opposite way to the wings: banked left, the horizon line runs higher on the left.
- Compass: the arrow points the way the airplane is flying.
- 25 questions. The pilot tests give about 12 seconds each, so the clock runs 5 minutes.

Where this shows up
The Air Force's AFOQT has an Instrument Comprehension section (25 questions in 5 minutes) and the Army's SIFT has Spatial Apperception (25 in 10). Both ask you to match an airplane's attitude and heading to a picture. This is practice for that skill, drawn by us; it is not the real test and uses none of its items.
Not official, and not tied to the Air Force, Army, Navy or any test maker.
