Kansas licenses Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors (LCPC) through the Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board. Everything below comes from the board's own pages and rules, checked October 18, 2026. Fees and rules change, so confirm on the linked pages before you pay.
Two NBCC exams in Kansas. The board asks for a nationally standardized competency exam for the LPC (NBCC lists the NCE, the exam Counselor Ticket is written to) and a national clinical exam for the LCPC (NBCC lists the NCMHCE, a case-study exam our guide does not cover).
Check with your board. Counselor Ticket is a study aid. Not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), the Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE), the American Counseling Association (ACA), CACREP or any state counseling board; NCE and NCMHCE are NBCC's marks, used here only to name the exams. Laws on confidentiality, duty to warn, reporting and licensing differ by state; follow your state's law, your agency and your supervisor.

What it takes

LCPC (Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor)
NCMHCE
An LPC (or the same qualifications) and 3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience under an approved training plan. $50 + $150.
LPC: be at least 21 with a master's in counseling of 60 hours spread across the nine core areas and including a supervised practicum, and pass a nationally standardized competency exam. Your application must be on file with the BSRB six weeks before you test.
LCPC training plan: file the LCPC Supervision Training Plan with a board-approved clinical supervisor and amend it if your supervisor or job changes.
LCPC:3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience under the approved plan and a national clinical exam.
Fees: application $50, exam $275 (either level), original license $150; renewal $100 (LPC) or $125 (LCPC) with 30 CE hours, 3 in ethics and 3 in diagnosis and treatment. Temporary licenses are $50 for 24 months.
The steps that hold nearly everywhere: a counseling master's degree (usually 60 semester hours, often CACREP-accredited), your board's approval, an NBCC exam, about two years of supervised experience, then the full license. The NCE has 200 questions (160 scored) in 3 hours 45 minutes; the NCMHCE is 11 clinical case studies in the same time; either can be retaken after 30 days (NBCC/CCE candidate handbooks).
