NPTE passing score: 600. Here's what that means.

Your score report will show one number between 200 and 800. Here is what it means for the NPTE-PT and NPTE-PTA, from FSBPT's candidate handbook and exam pages.

The short answer

600 on a scale of 200 to 800 passes. Same number for PT and PTA, in every state.

The 600 isn't a percent. FSBPT converts your number of right answers on the scored questions to the 200-800 scale, so the scale means the same thing on every form. The number of questions you need right can shift slightly between forms, and FSBPT doesn't publish a raw percent.

The pretest questions aren't marked. Every question has four choices and one right answer, and there's no penalty for guessing, so never leave one blank.

What 600 does and doesn't mean

It is a criterion-referenced standard: you pass by showing a set level of knowledge, not by beating other test-takers. There's no curve and no quota. Your scaled score also isn't a percent correct, so a 600 doesn't mean you got 60% or 75% right.

When you'll know

Your score report is on your FSBPT dashboard about 10 business days after your test date, free, for 30 days. Save a copy.

If you didn't pass

FSBPT's retake rules apply to each level (PT and PTA separately):

Each registration also needs your licensing jurisdiction's approval. The PTA exam has its own practice test: NPTE-PTA practice test.

More questions

What is a passing score on the NPTE?

600 on a scale of 200 to 800. It is the same for the NPTE-PT and the NPTE-PTA, and the same in every jurisdiction.

How many questions do you need to get right to pass the NPTE?

FSBPT does not publish a raw number or percent. Your right answers on the scored questions are converted to the 200-800 scale, and the raw number needed can shift slightly from form to form.

How many times can you take the NPTE?

No more than three times in 12 months and six times in a lifetime for each exam level. Two scores below 400 bar you from that exam.

When do NPTE scores come out?

About 10 business days after the test date, on your FSBPT dashboard, free for 30 days.
