A&P written passing score: 70% on each test

The mechanic certificate takes three knowledge tests. Here is the pass mark for each, and the retest rules, from the FAA's testing matrix and Part 65.

The short answer

General: 42 of 60. Airframe: 70 of 100. Powerplant: 70 of 100. Each one passes at 70%.

Each test gets 2 hours. You need all of the tests for your certificate and ratings passed within 24 months (14 CFR 65.71). After the knowledge tests come the oral and practical tests.

Powerplant (AMP)1002.0 h70

From the FAA Airman Knowledge Testing Matrix, revised September 25, 2026.

If you didn't pass

Wait 30 days, or skip the wait with a signed statement from someone who holds the certificate and rating you're after, saying they gave you more instruction in each subject you failed and consider you ready (14 CFR 65.19). Either way, bring the failed AKTR to the test center.

The 24-month clock

To get the certificate you must pass all of the prescribed tests within 24 months (14 CFR 65.71). Adding a rating later has its own 24-calendar-month window for that rating's tests.
